The European Center for Disaster Medicine is a partner of the Course on Human and Animal Health in Emergencies
Salerno-Colliano, March 2024
In the heart of the province of Salerno, amidst the picturesque setting of Colliano, Italy, the first session of the course on Human and Veterinary Health, along with Social Assistance in Emergencies, took place.
Organized by the Zooprophylactic Institute of South Italy and the Regional Center of Reference for Emergency Prevention and Management CeRVEnE, the course attracted over 80 professionals from various disciplines, including veterinarians, medical doctors, pharmacists, chemical biologists, and biomedical laboratory technicians. The active participation of these professionals highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in disaster preparedness and response.
The course had three main objectives: acquiring knowledge for risk prevention and mitigation, applying methodologies of the complex Civil Protection system, and promoting synergy among different entities and organizations. The involvement of Civil Protection volunteers further enriched the learning experience, providing a practical and concrete perspective to the discussions.
The first day of the course was characterized by prominent speakers and practical exercises, offering participants a unique opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in real-life situations. The second day saw the presence of the Deputy Head of the Italian National Civil Protection Department, along with high-level representatives from the Region, Province, and Municipalities, as well as academic and operational institutions. This distinguished participation emphasized the importance of disseminating risk culture and fostering collective awareness, preparing both old and new generations to face emerging challenges.
The first session of the course demonstrated how, in resilience and emergency preparedness, collaboration among research institutes, governmental entities, and volunteer organizations is fundamental to ensuring the safety and well-being of communities.
