"EUROMED PROTECT-NET": Launching the International Cooperation Action for Euro-Mediterranean Security
Republic of San Marino 2-3 May 2024
It is with immense satisfaction that we present today the initiative "EUROMED PROTECT-NET - Euro-Mediterranean Forum for Disaster Risk Governance, Health Preparedness, and Networking Advancement".
The action, led by the European Center for Disaster Medicine (CEMEC) and supported by the Council of Europe, aims to improve disaster risk governance, with particular attention to health aspects, within the Euro-Mediterranean area .
The activities aim both to promote the increase of capacity and knowledge and to strengthen cooperation between the main actors involved in disaster reduction. The initiative also involves the development of cohesive strategies and the sharing of information between the entities involved.
EUROMED PROTECT-NET recently started in the Republic of San Marino with a two-day Forum inaugurated in the presence of the Most Excellent Captains Regent, the Secretary of State for Health, and civil and military authorities. The event was attended by Mr. Krzysztof Zyman, Executive Secretary of the Major Risks Agreement of the Council of Europe, the Directors and Delegates of the 22 specialized Centers and the Permanent Representatives of the various nations.
In the two days of work, which took place at the Center for Global Studies of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, the various Centers presented the role, organization and activities of the relevant structures together with the state of the art and future prospects in disaster preparation and management at a national level.
The current natural, accidental and deliberate crises and emergencies plaguing the globe urgently highlight the inevitable need to adopt a holistic and integrated approach to disaster prevention and management. In addition to responding to the needs of the moment, we must in fact look to the future with a proactive and innovative vision.
To effectively address risk in an ever-changing world, an increasingly global and coordinated effort is required. This effort requires strengthening institutions and capacities at all levels, from local to international governance.
Furthermore, it is essential to invest increasingly in training and education to ensure that communities have the skills necessary to face emerging challenges.
In this context, EUROMED PROTECT-NET represents an unprecedented opportunity to initiate collaboration and exchange of knowledge between different regions and sectors for a more efficient and inclusive management of global risks. Only such cooperation can, in fact, support the strengthening of our ability to understand threats and vulnerabilities, allowing for more effective and targeted preparation, response and mitigation of consequences.
